Teaching My Kids Mystery Writing

One of my favorite things about homeschooling is the HOME aspect: I get to use all my passions and talents to teach my kids. That includes showing them all of my favorite hobbies, like crochet and gaming, and all my passion projects, like volunteer work and writing. In fact, without me knowing it, I’ve been teaching my kids to write a mystery since they were born. Simply because I love mysteries and so have included them in our everyday life.

When it came time to have them write their own mystery novels, for High School, I dug deep in my arsenal of crime and cozies and came up with the following plan. Before outlining, I introduced them to classic mystery novels and then refreshed their writing skills. Then I teach them all about the plot and how to outline it. You can find that post here. (Coming Soon)

Feel free to use it for your kiddos as well. Be aware that it’s a growing work in progress. (If there’s not a button I haven’t completed the post yet) But have at it. Have fun. And let me know what you think.

Writing a Mystery Shouldn't be a Mystery
Writing a mystery shouldn’t BE a mystery

The first step: learning from classic mystery writings

I introduce them to classic authors and stories from the mystery genre.

Next, I give their basic writing skills a refresh.

(I like to incorporate these while reading, analyzing, and discussing the books above. )
