Books for the Almost Adulting

The ages between 17 and 21 are crazy with inner and outer turmoil. A girl is almost an adult. Perhaps she’s struggling with being single. Maybe she’s married or thinking of marriage. Perhaps she’s even as a little one of her own. That doesn’t mean she’s no longer your girl. She needs you more than ever, even if she won’t admit it. Books are great way to keep the dialogue going during this wild season.

Fawkes

Staring a year before the world meets Guy Fawkes, this historical fantasy is brimming with easy allegory and gentle conviction. Although fun and whimsical this book feeds the soul and not only the imagination. The audible version is stellar!

The Last Battle: Narnia

Often overlooked, the last of the Chronicles of Narnia is beautiful. Meeting up with the old heroes of Narnia will have you and your girl reminiscing about your first visit through the wardrobe. The Last Battle is inspiring and hope laden. It’s a wonderful reminder of the rewards of steadfast faith and friendship.

Anomaly

I couldn’t let this list end without adding a bit of Sci Fi to the mix. Anomaly is the first book in a trilogy. People are “Created” in a lab and honed to live without feeling. (As feelings are seen as weakness) During all this, the Lord has left a remnant, one to share the gospel with all who pass. Courage in faith is the basis of this treat of a story. **** WARNING: there are many books titled Anomaly… get the one by Krista Mcgee****

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

I almost didn’t add this gritty and sometimes too realistic read. It has quiet a few sad and heavy scenes. But in the end, the hope reflected in the story line won out. I couldn’t leave it behind. Definitely, a conversation starter and a compassion builder. Keep an open mind and dive deeply with your girl into the beauty of the not so glamorous past. I couldn’t get through the book on paper. But I really enjoyed the audio version.

Which genre do you and your girl or your mom lean toward? Do you each have a favorite but meet in the middle for read alongs? My mom and I have different tastes but we both love cozy mysteries. In fact, our conversations about our literary friends prompted me to start my own series of cozy mysteries. Check them out.
