Stuck Halfway Thru

Camp Nanowrimo is halfway done. You’ve sprinted and sparred with the words. But now, you’re stuck. Your brain can’t find any more adjectives or verbs or phrases. You’re determined to finish strong…but how? Here are some quick tricks to ramp up your writing. Pick a resource, dive in, and get back to creating.

Help your Character Express Themselves:

Your poor MC is dangling on the edge of life change. You can see them. You can feel them. But you can’t get your words to reflect what they’re going through. Dig into this thesaurus and others in the series. Sometimes nailing one scene can birth many scenes to follow.

Get to the Core of Your Story:

Sometimes we meander around the center of our story. We dread it. We avoid it. Avoid this trap by jumping right into the middle of your piece. This short book redirects the focus and gets to the nitty-gritty. When you’re stuck get down to the meat of the project. The Middle!

Story dice rock! There are multiple packs of story dice. The best, I feel, for a blocked situation are the Action Dice. Action moves your story because it moves your characters. Here’s your assignment: Roll the Dice. Select a character from your project. Start a five-minute timer. Then using all the dice, free write a random scene for your character to navigate. Maybe it will make it into your story… more likely it will land in the trash. But taking the pressure of the plot off of your pen can help get the words flowing again. Have fun!
