Together Time Fall 2019
Update Fall 2019: The Hualdes have formally begun their homeschool year. This means books… a lot of books. Let’s investigate each “subject” one at a time. Starting with our Together Time Basket…. my favorite!
I often get asked, “How do you keep together time going strong with older kiddos?” My answer? “Easy Peasy! Combine subjects!”
I love combining subjects.
It does several things:
- It makes the teacher’s workload lighter. (that’s me- mom, by the way.)
- It builds relationships… (How? see point 3)
- It creates a natural environment for discussion
- It gives us a time to recalibrate and recenter
- Plus: It keeps me more engaged which equals a better understanding of my kiddos schedules and struggles and bonus learning time for mom!
This year I’m teaching 7th and 10th grade. It’s a large jump in maturity and intellectual capability. But that doesn’t mean together time (aka T-T) needs to pander to the youngest student. In fact, with the exception of our fun reads (which I pick out as requested and at random), every subject is labeled at far above my littlest’s grade level.
But the kid still gets it. They understand it all and have insightful points to add and great thought-provoking questions that spur us all onward. T-T would definitely be less educational and less inspirational without this kiddo’s point of view.
